Terry Moran announced a move to Substack on June 11, 2025, a day after ABC News said it would not renew his contract over an X post in which he called President Trump and adviser Stephen Miller “world-class haters.” In a video, Moran said he had spent almost 28 years at ABC News.
Veteran journalist Terry Moran announced he is moving to Substack, a day after ABC News ended his nearly 28-year run with the network. ABC cut ties with Moran on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, following a since-deleted post on X in which he criticized President Donald Trump and White House adviser Stephen Miller, calling both “world-class haters.”
“For almost twenty eight years, I was a reporter and anchor for ABC news. And as you may have heard, I’m not there anymore,” Moran said in a video posted Wednesday, June 11, on Substack.
“I’m here with you on Substack, this amazing space, and I can’t wait to get at it, to get at the important work that we all have to do in this time of such trouble for our country,” he said.
“I’m going to be reporting and interviewing and just sharing with you and hoping to hear from you as well,” Moran added. He said it would “be a few days, maybe a little bit longer” before he was fully up and running, because he had to “get some stuff sorted out.”
What ABC said
ABC News said it was at the end of its agreement with Moran and had decided not to renew it, adding that his post clearly violated the network’s policies and that it holds its reporters to standards of objectivity and fairness.
The deleted post
In the post, shared over the weekend before his dismissal, Moran wrote about Miller: “It’s not brains. It’s bile.” He described Miller as “richly endowed with the capacity for hatred” and called him “a world-class hater.” He wrote that Trump “is a world-class hater” as well, arguing that for Trump, hatred is a means to the end of his own glorification, which Moran called “his spiritual nourishment.”
Moran deleted the post after it drew criticism, including from White House officials.
Why Substack
A number of journalists have turned to Substack in recent years, using it to publish independently and reach readers directly through subscriptions. Moran said he plans to focus on reporting and interviews, but did not say exactly when his first full posts would appear.
