After 28 years with ABC News, veteran anchor Terry Moran finds himself at a new frontier. He was terminated on Tuesday, June 10, after posting criticisms on X about President Donald Trump and adviser Stephen Miller... calling both “world-class haters.” The post was removed, but the fallout was swift.
“For almost 28 years, I was a reporter and anchor for ABC News. And as you may have heard, I’m not there anymore,” Moran said in a heartfelt video posted Wednesday, June 11, also shared on Substack.
He continued… “I’m here with you on Substack, this amazing space, and I can’t wait to get at it… Get at the important work that we all have to do in this time of such trouble for our country.”
Moran explained his new path: “I will be reporting and interviewing and just sharing with you, and hoping to hear from you as well.” He added candidly that it might “be a few days... maybe a little bit longer” before his Substack launches properly, as he needs to “get some stuff sorted out.”
What ABC Said
ABC issued a statement after Moran's post: “We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and have made the decision to not renew. The deleted post clearly violated ABC News policies… we hold all our reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness and professionalism.”
The network emphasized its commitment to trust and journalistic integrity, suggesting Moran’s comments crossed a line.
The Deleted Post
In the early hours of Sunday, June 8, Moran posted strong words against political figures, notably Stephen Miller. “Miller is a man richly endowed with the capacity for hatred… he eats his hate,” Moran stated. He added that Trump is also “a world-class hater... his hatred is only a means to an end.... his own glorification. That’s his spiritual nourishment.”
The post sparked swift backlash, prompting Moran to delete it but also setting off institutional consequences.
Why Substack?
Substack has become a refuge for many journalists seeking independence. It allows creators to engage directly with readers, free from corporate oversight.... and build personal brands. Moran seems eager to embrace that freedom.
His pivot comes at a crucial moment, as tensions between traditional media ethics and outspoken commentary intensify. He’s betting that a digital, uncensored platform can deliver the nuanced discourse he believes is essential now.
What’s Next for Moran?
Moran promises to dive into reporting, interviews, and thoughtful commentary. The video ending on Substack emphasized listener engagement... “hoping to hear from you as well.” He plans to offer insights directly to readers, unfiltered by network policies.
Will his candid style find traction? It’s a gamble... but one backed by his decades-long reputation and deep audience trust.
Exactly when his first Substack post drops is unclear. But he’s made it clear that his focus will be real, honest journalism.... something he feels the country desperately needs.
Moran has turned a career setback into a fresh start. And for many, this move feels like a declaration: the spirit of journalism may be evolving... but not giving up.
Now the question is... can he build something as powerful without ABC’s platform behind him?
Time will tell... but for now, this new chapter is just beginning.
We might see him rise even higher. Or maybe he falls flat. Only Substack will say.
