Ownership and Funding

This page explains the ownership and funding of Anonymous and how we keep business decisions separate from the newsroom.

Last updated: October 24, 2026

Readers have a right to know who is behind the news they read. This page explains who owns Anonymous, how we are funded and how we keep commercial interests separate from our journalism.

Who owns Anonymous: ownership and funding

Anonymous is published by Anonymous Group Inc, a privately owned company. It is not owned or controlled by any government, political party, political campaign or lobbying group.

Anonymous Group Inc also operates the Anonymous brand on social media, with about 11 million followers on Facebook and a presence on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, LinkedIn and Pinterest.

Leadership

The company’s leadership is responsible for the overall direction of the business and for making sure the newsroom has the independence and resources it needs to meet our editorial standards.

How we are funded

Anonymous is free to read. We pay for our journalism through:

  • Advertising: display advertising served through Google AdSense and other third-party advertising partners.
  • Affiliate commissions: our Shop uses affiliate links, and we may earn a commission when readers buy through them, at no extra cost to the reader.
  • Brand partnerships: sponsored campaigns and collaborations with brands that fit our values. Any sponsored content is clearly labeled.

No government or political funding

We do not receive government funding, and we do not accept funding from political parties, candidates, political campaigns or lobbying groups.

Editorial independence

Commercial and editorial decisions are kept separate. Our journalists decide what to cover and how to cover it based on news value and the public interest, not on the wishes of advertisers, partners or owners.

  • Advertisers and partners do not review or approve stories before publication.
  • Advertisers cannot buy favorable coverage or have critical coverage removed.
  • Affiliate commissions do not influence which products or companies we report on in the news.
  • Journalists are not paid based on whether a story pleases an advertiser.
  • Ownership does not direct journalists to report stories in a particular way.

Business inquiries are handled separately from the newsroom.

How paid content is labeled

Readers should always know when they are looking at paid content.

  • Advertisements are labeled “Advertisement.”
  • Content created with or paid for by a brand partner is labeled “Sponsored” and names the partner where appropriate.
  • Pages that contain affiliate links, including our Shop, disclose that we may earn a commission.

Sponsored content is never presented as independent news reporting.

Choosing partners

We work with brands whose products and messages are consistent with our mission of empowering young people and supporting human and animal rights. We may decline any advertising or partnership that is misleading, harmful, discriminatory or in conflict with our values.

Ads are often served automatically by third-party networks, so we do not personally select every ad you see. If you see an ad that looks misleading or inappropriate, please tell us so we can review it with our advertising partners.

Conflicts of interest

Staff are expected to avoid conflicts of interest and to disclose any personal, financial or professional interest that could affect their work. When a story involves a company or person with a commercial connection to Anonymous Group Inc, we disclose that connection to readers.

Transparency

If our ownership or main sources of funding change in a meaningful way, we will update this page. Learn more about our standards in our Editorial Policy.
