Anyone can call an operation a rescue, so checking an animal rescue starts with its tax status rather than its website. The IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search shows whether a group is recognized under section 501(c)(3), whether its status was revoked, and which annual returns it filed.
Check the Animal Rescue’s Tax Status First
Anyone can call an operation a rescue. The word carries no legal weight on its own, which is why verification starts with tax status rather than with the website. Registered charities in the United States hold recognition from the Internal Revenue Service, usually under section 501(c)(3), and that recognition is searchable. The IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search confirms whether an organisation is currently recognised, whether its status has been automatically revoked for failure to file, and which annual returns it has submitted. An organisation that cannot be found there may still be legitimate, but the gap is worth asking about.
The second check is the annual return itself. Most tax-exempt organisations file a Form 990, and those filings are public documents. They show revenue, expenditure broken into functional categories, executive compensation above certain thresholds, and the names of officers and directors. ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer and Candid both host searchable archives of these filings. Reading two or three consecutive years is more informative than reading one, because it shows whether spending patterns are stable or whether the organisation’s finances have shifted sharply.
Third, check the animal-specific credentials. If the group holds animals on site, ask whether it is licensed or inspected by the state agriculture department, and whether it appears in the USDA Animal Care public search. Ask for the name of the veterinarian who provides care. Established rescues answer these questions readily. Reluctance to answer is itself information, and so is an organisation that solicits donations while declining to say where the animals are housed.
